Unlike many matches that feature established rivals, this bout represents a first-time meeting between two wrestlers who have spent a few years circling each other in international competition.

Retherford enters RAF GEORGIA as one of the most accomplished American wrestlers of his generation. The former Penn State superstar is a three-time NCAA National Champion, two-time Hodge Trophy winner, World Silver Medalist, 2023 World Champion and a 1-0 RAF veteran after a decisive RAF09 victory equipped with a patented bow and arrow in the closing seconds. Few wrestlers in the world can match his combination of pace, pressure and technical perfection.

Standing across from him will be one of Central Asia's most dangerous competitors. Akmataliev has quietly built one of the strongest international resumes in the division. Akmataliev has won World Championship medals and consistently ranks among the world's elite wrestlers. The Kyrgyz star captured U23 World gold before becoming a senior World medalist and Olympian.

The match has Match of the Night potential written all over it.

Retherford possesses one of the most violent, exciting and action-packed styles in the sport and is always pushing for bigger moves and more points on the board. Akmataliev’s style complements that perfectly. All action and controlled chaos.

Should this match go the distance, fans may ask for an encore.

The match features many unknown variables starting with pace. Retherford’s typical advantage lies in a strong pace advantage. Few wrestlers are as effective when constantly attacking and forcing opponents to defend than Retherford. More pressure means more chaos and where that may play to his advantage against most, Retherford may be playing right into the hand of Akmataliev who feeds off of messy matches.

Another variable is the “anyone, any time, any place” mentality of Akmataliev. He may not be consistently favored against wrestlers of Retherford’s caliber but everybody, including Retherford knows that he’s a giant threat to spoil somebody’s night.

Retherford will need to control the center mat position. Akmataliev is an excellent counter wrestler who thrives when opponents overcommit to attacks. If Retherford can stay disciplined while maintaining forward pressure, he can force Akmataliev into uncomfortable exchanges.

Another key for the American will be his gas tank. Over the years, Retherford has consistently separated himself from elite competition by maintaining a pace that few wrestlers can match for six minutes.

For Akmataliev, the formula is much different. The Kyrgyz star must turn the match into a battle of timing and efficiency rather than volume. Retherford wants a high-output contest filled with constant exchanges. Akmataliev's best chance is making every exchange count.

Akmataliev will also need to capitalize on counterattacks. Throughout his budding international career, he has proven capable of punishing opponents who get reckless offensively. If Retherford becomes overly aggressive, Akmataliev has the technical ability to make him regret it.
