It has been a few months since one of the most aggressive Iowa Hawkeyes not named Spencer Lee has been back on the mat. At RAF11 Michael Caliendo returns to take on one of Stillwater’s wildest Cowboys.
When RAF announced the matchup between Mirzo Khayitov and Mikey Caliendo, it immediately became one of the event's most intriguing matchups. It has “Match of the Night” written all over it and has potential to be the highest scoring match as well.
Both athletes clash with just as much on the line as one another but pulling from opposite directions.
For Caliendo, the match is another opportunity to compete on a major stage following an outstanding collegiate career.
The former Iowa Hawkeye made his name through NCAA’s most relentless pace, disciplined positioning and an offensive style built on overwhelming opponents over the course of a period and clamping down for the remainder of the match. The wrestling style made him a cult hero for North Dakota State followed by a nationwide superstar at Iowa.
Caliendo closed out his collegiate career as the 165-pound runner up. Caliendo fell short against the future Hodge Trophy winner, took a handful of months off and is now making one of the biggest returns of the year, shifting his focus to RAF, where the stakes are different but the expectations remain just as high.
Standing across from him will be one of the most accomplished international competitors he has faced. Before committing to the Oklahoma State RTC, Mirzo Khayitov has earned his reputation through years of success on the freestyle circuit where every position matters and mistakes are often punished immediately. His experience against elite international opposition has sharpened an ability to capitalize on openings in the center, as well as the edge of the mat making him a dangerous opponent regardless of the score or stage.
The matchup presents a fascinating contrast between high-paced, smashmouth American collegiate wrestling and world-level freestyle experience refined in Stillwater.
Caliendo's greatest weapon has always been his pace that fuels his offensive volume. Few wrestlers bring the kind of relentless pressure he brings from the opening whistle and even less maintain it. Constant hand fighting, aggressive forward movement and a habit of attacking from multiple positions allow him to wear opponents down physically and mentally. His conditioning has repeatedly proven to be one of his biggest advantages, enabling him to continue creating offense late in matches when others begin to fade.
If Caliendo controls the tempo, forces extended exchanges and dictates where the action takes place as he always has, he can immediately or gradually break through even the strongest defenses. His ability to chain attacks together rather than relying on a single shot makes him particularly difficult to defend over an entire match.
Khayitov presents an entirely different challenge.
Khayitov has adjusted to international freestyle competition that rewards efficiency as much as aggression. He has built his success around intelligent positioning, precise timing and exceptional awareness in every phase of a match. He’s not afraid to press offense around low-risk push out points to chip away or push matches out of reach. Rather than forcing unnecessary exchanges, he excels at recognizing moments when opponents become overextended and turning those opportunities into scoring sequences.
If Caliendo pushes an aggressive pace without maintaining disciplined positioning, Khayitov has the experience and technical ability to make him pay. Conversely, allowing Caliendo to dictate the rhythm from start to finish could prove equally dangerous, as few wrestlers are better at building momentum through sustained pressure.
The battle may ultimately come down to who controls the center of the mat.
It could be a high-scoring circus match or a blood and guts war but one thing is for certain, if there’s one match to avoid a bathroom break, it’s this one.
