LIGHT BEER

Rarely do we come across combat athletes so dominant that a loss would catch everybody off guard and a tech fall would momentarily shock the world. That’s exactly the level of dominance Kyle Snyder carries and we’re about to experience the third installment of a rivalry featuring Akhmed Tazhudinov, the only man to ever defeat him by wrestling’s mercy rule.
Snyder has been one of the pillars of American wrestling since his teenage years. “Snyderman” introduced himself to the world in high school when he went on an undefeated run in which he notably gave up a single takedown in his entire career. An Olympic gold medalist, multiple-time world champion and one of the most accomplished wrestlers the United States has ever produced, Snyder has spent nearly half of his life battling the very best the sport has to offer.
Across those countless clashes Snyder has taken few losses, traded wins with legends and built a resume that places him among the greatest American wrestlers of all time.
But among every result on that resume there’s one that still stands apart.
Only one man has ever defeated Snyder by technical fall and that man is his RAF 07 opponent, Akhmed Tazhudinov.
The Dagestani star shocked the wrestling world when the two first met, turning what many expected to be a competitive clash into one of the most stunning scorelines of Snyder’s career. In a sport where margins between elite are often razor thin and frankly, tend to go the Ohio State Buckeye’s way, Tazhudinov struck early and never gave Snyder the opportunity to recover.
By the end of the bout the scoreboard told a story never before seen attached to Snyder’s name. An 11-0 tech fall loss.
For Tazhudinov it was a statement victory that cemented his arrival among the world’s elite. The two rematched one year later in 2024 at the Paris Olympic games and Snyder was bested again but proved the first match wasn’t the standard. The 6-4 final score told the story of two men who refused to accept the status quo.
Young, explosive and armed with a dangerous arsenal of attacks, 23-year-old Tazhudinov represents a new wave of freestyle wrestling. His ability to score quickly and capitalize on the smallest of openings has already made him one of the most dangerous competitors in the division.
When he finds his rhythm matches can unravel quickly for even the most accomplished opponents.
For Snyder the path to victory starts with the same formula that has carried him through the biggest stages in wrestling. Control the ties, dictate the pace and force the match into the kind of exchanges where his strength and conditioning become overwhelming advantages.
Long hand fights, disciplined positioning and patience in his attacks will be critical if he hopes to reverse the outcome of their first meeting.
The goal isn’t to chase big points early but to prevent Tazhudinov from building the momentum that made their first match spiral so quickly and avoid a “grind it out” exchange many of Taz’s opponents fall victim to.
For Tazhudinov the blueprint remains far simpler.
Push the tempo, stay offensive and capitalize the moment Snyder is forced into reactive positions. Few young wrestlers are as dangerous in open exchanges and if he can recreate the rhythm of their first meeting the advantage may once again tilt in his favor.
If that happens the third installment could become another defining moment in the young star’s career. It could lead him to the newly-minted light-heavyweight championship belt and slamming the door on the rivalry.
Title matches already have enough on the line. It’s very rare we get this much heat to go along with it.
