Jason Nolf vs Joey Blaze: Order Meets Anarchy

Even after barely turning 30, Penn State Nittany Lion, Jason Nolf, finds himself the “crafty old dog” in a sea of hungry challengers. The next man up for the three-time NCAA National Champion is one of the Big 10’s most dangerous 165-pounders, Joey Blaze. One of wrestling’s most unpredictable winners clashes with a dangerous dark horse in this RAF08 dream match.

There aren’t many paths to a dull match when Jason Nolf or Joey Blaze are on the mat. One has made a name for himself as one of the most innovative and dominant competitors in wrestling history and the other continues to turn heads and forge his own path to greatness. Matching them up leads to one of the most intriguing matchups on the card.

Fans are on Match of the Night watch any time Nolf takes the mat. There’s a different kind of tension in the air when the three-time NCAA National Champion’s music hits in the arena. Fireworks and innovation are two guarantees to his matches and far more often than not his hand is raised as a result. The juggle of discipline and creativity isn’t usually balanced well among athletes. The more a gameplan hinges upon creativity, the more the fundamentals seem to fade into the distance. Not with Nolf.

He’s as dynamic as they come. A proven finisher with a deep bag of tricks, Nolf has made a career out of turning unconventional positions into highlight-reel moments. Where others see scrambles, he sees solutions.

Nolf’s resume speaks for itself but it’s his ability to adapt mid-exchange that separates him. He doesn’t need perfect position to score, he just needs a window. Give him even a slight opening and he’ll find a way to convert, often in ways that don’t look textbook but get the job done anyway. To add to it, it never appears that Nolf lucks into rare opportunities, he creatively and methodically creates them in ways no other wrestlers seem to pull off.

What makes this matchup compelling is how those styles interact. Nolf is comfortable in the mess. The more unpredictable things get, the more dangerous he becomes. Blaze wants control, wants to dictate pace, wants to make this match feel like a grind.

Blaze has quietly but effectively built a reputation as one of the most suffocating competitors in the Big Ten. He lulls opponents into his pace and style where nothing feels overwhelming until opponents look at the clock and realize they haven't had space to breathe in three minutes. His approach is rooted in pressure, hand fighting and trapping opponents by forcing reactions that they don’t even realize they’re making.

He’s the type of grappler who doesn’t just look to score, he looks to drain. He breaks his opponents down knowing the points will come as a result. Every tie-up has intention, every snap carries weight and every second you spend underneath him feels longer than it should. Over time, that style doesn’t just win matches, it breaks confidence.

For Blaze, the path is clear: slow it down without actually slowing down. That means constant contact, heavy hands and limiting the kind of space Nolf needs to create offense. If Blaze can keep exchanges tight and force Nolf into defensive reactions near the edge of the mat, he can start stacking control time, finding scoring opportunities and wearing him out.

What Blaze should lean on is his discipline and strength to keep Nolf on his back foot, closer to the edge of the mat than he’s used to. Against someone like Nolf, overcommitting is a risk. Blaze has to stay calculated and pressure forward without recklessness. He may come in the stronger of the two but one wrong extension could turn into points the other way.

Nolf’s approach flips that entirely. He doesn’t want a static match. He needs movement, transitions, an open mat and moments where instinct takes over. If he can create scrambles early, even if he doesn’t score right away, he begins to pull Blaze into deeper waters stylistically.

Another key for Nolf is pace in bursts. He doesn’t necessarily need to outwork Blaze minute-for-minute but if he can win the high-impact exchanges, that may be enough in the RAF format. Efficiency over volume.

It’s a matchup where control and creativity are the deciding factors. If Blaze turns it into a grind, it favors him. If Nolf turns it into a scramble, it could swing fast.

Will Joey Blaze impose his will long enough to neutralize the chaos or will Jason Nolf once again find offense where none seems to exist? Find out Saturday, April 18 at RAF08 ONLY on FOX Nation!
