Classic Varner. Heavy hands, collar ties and positional control from start to finish.

First period was all feel and pressure. Varner controlled ties and tempo, forcing Downey onto the shot clock halfway through the frame. Downey couldn’t score, and Varner took the 1–0 lead into the break.

Second period—same strategy. Varner back in the ties, walking Downey around the mat. Downey tried to elbow pass out of pressure but got stuck again.

Then came the moment: classic Varner ankle pick, timed perfectly off an underhook-club sequence. Clean four-point score that broke it wide open.

In the third, Downey tried to open things up. He had one solid look late, getting in on a shot with short time, but Varner shut it down with heavy hips and more collar pressure.
