Gable Steveson vs Alexander Romanov - The Dawning of a New Era

The face of an era is finally throwing on the RAF singlet and looking to make a charge towards the heavyweight title but opposite him will be an MMA powerhouse with a 21-4 (1) record and a serious strength advantage against almost any opponent he faces. Gable Steveson will either remind the world who put heavyweights on the map or Alexander Romanov will become the most talked about combat athlete on the planet at RAF09.

Gable Steveson and Alexander Romanov are squaring off to become the most feared heavyweight in combat sports. With Steveson making his RAF debut and Romanov taking on yet another American legend, they’re looking to do more than “make a splash,” they’re looking to be the next man up.

Should Gable Steveson make quick work of one of the most imposing heavyweight fighters in the cage, fans will be calling for a title shot rematch against Wyatt Hendrickson. Should Romanov get his hand raised it will punch his ticket to superstardom across the combat sports landscape.

Both men have a lot to lose and even more to gain.

Steveson knows nothing other than being the most talked about name in the sport since his collegiate career began. With the explosivity and quickness of a 157-pounder, unmatched charisma and likability and the rock-solid technique to tie it all together, Steveson has been as captivating for fans as he is dominant to his opponents. The Minnesota Golden Gopher pinned and tech-ed his way into two Hodge Trophies, two NCAA National Championships and one of the most memorable Olympic Gold Medals of all time.

The only thing he didn’t do a lot of was lose. Even the few times he was bested, his opponents would go on to enjoy life-altering career boosts as a result.

His latest venture into MMA has been just as dominant. Already at 3-0 with three first-round finishes and a 15-second Dirty Boxing KO to go with it, Steveson is putting the heavyweight world on notice that nobody is safe regardless of the discipline. Now making his debut with RAF, he’s announcing to the wrestling world that he’s coming home.

One thing Steveson has never shown interest in doing is giving a half effort. He’s coming to RAF for nothing less than taking over the division but he’ll have to go through Alexander Romanov first.

Romanov comes into the match more known for his active 10-year MMA career but even more experience on the mat than he does in the cage. The 21-4(1) mixed martial artist made his way into combat by way of wrestling, medaling in the Euro Games, World University Championships and more.

His dominance in the cage is directly attributed to the threat of his ground game that carries so much weight, he oftentimes doesn’t even have to shoot a takedown to keep opponents on their back feet.

He comes in with a potential strength advantage and more than enough experience to put doubt in Steveson’s mind. He’s a threatening competitor who has more to gain than lose. The perfect position to be in.

Steveson and RAF Heavyweight Champion Wyatt Hendrickson stopped the sports world from turning in their 2025 NCAA National Championship match and the smoke still hasn’t fully cleared. A victory over Romanov could fast-track him to the title and one of the most sought-after matchups in the sport.

Can Romanov defeat Steveson, it won’t just earn him an RAF title shot, he’ll be able to call his shot across the combat sports landscape. Both men place themselves firmly in the driver’s seat with a win and then both know it.

For Steveson the key to victory is to stay the course, trust the fundamentals and skillset that made you the face of the sport.

For Romanov, make it dirty and rough, force underhooks, attempt throws and add anything else to make the match unconventional for Steveson.

Both men have a path to victory and a path to the RAF title but who will make the biggest splash in the sport?
