LIGHT BEER
LIGHT BEER

When Givi Matcharashvili made his RAF debut he put an end to the surging run of University of Iowa National Champion Stephen Buchanan and catapulted himself right into title contention. Now, he’s opening the door and giving Missouri’s Zach Elam the same opportunity.
The light heavyweight division is jam-packed with tough talent and every promotional debut seems to birth a new star. One half of RAF GEORGIA’S non-title light heavyweight clash has experienced it and one looks to add his name to the list.
Elam, of the University of Missouri possesses the size, power and finishing ability necessary to change a match with a single exchange. Elam was one of the most sought-after heavyweights heading into college where he would win the 2023 Southern Scuffle, become a member of Mizzou’s 100 Win Club, All-American twice and more.
His ability to score in bunches and adjust and improve seemingly every period made him one of the toughest puzzles in the division. He’s one of the most interesting newcomers to the roster and has the ability to grind out low-scoring affairs, win a shootout or close it out early with a pinfall. Performance of the Night or Match of the Night talks always seem to swirl around his matchups.
Matcharashvili is one of the hardest light heavyweights to score on and dominates positioning battles, ties and technical precision instead of a flashy approach. His approach in his match with Stephen Buchanan put the division on notice. He fell short in a title match at RAF09 but is back with fire in his eyes at RAF GEORGIA.
The Georgian star is a three-time European Champion, two-time World bronze medalist and captured a silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Since moving down to a new weight class, he has established himself as one of the premier international wrestlers in the world.
For Elam, RAF GEORGIA presents an opportunity to immediately establish himself against elite international competition. He built a collegiate resume most would be happy to hang their hat on but Elam isn’t done yet.
To defeat Matcharashvili, Elam must turn the match into a physical battle. The collegiate heavyweight has spent years overwhelming opponents with strength, pressure and powerful finishes. He can create offense or let opponents over-extend their way into losing matches. Matcharashvili is about as offensively sound as they come so Elam will need to tap into his strongest offensive arsenal to get the victory.
Elam is a force but nothing Matcharashvili hasn’t seen before. Few wrestlers in the division have spent more time competing under the brightest lights. Olympic finals, World Championships, and European Championships have all prepared the Georgian star for moments like this.
Matcharashvili must control positioning. Throughout his international career, he has consistently frustrated opponents with his ability to win hand-fighting exchanges and create scoring opportunities without exposing himself to unnecessary risk. For his size, Elam is deceptively light on the feet and had-fight exchanges can break up his chances to make big moves.
Another advantage comes from Matcharashvili's efficiency. Elite international wrestlers often separate themselves not by how much they attack, but by how often they score when opportunities arise. The Georgian has built his career on maximizing those moments.
Will Zach Elam announce his arrival on the international stage with one of the biggest wins of his career, or will Givi Matcharashvili add another impressive victory to one of the most accomplished resumes in wrestling? Both men have the opportunity to land on Kyle Snyder’s radar, who will make the most of it.
