The 2026 NCAA Wrestling National Championship could’ve sold out an arena for the 133-pound division alone. Some of the most solid veterans in the sport to the most exciting young talent wrestling has seen in decades, to even make the podium was going to be one of the toughest feats in the careers of the athletes.
Stuck smack in the thick of it all was defending National Champion, Lucas Byrd.
In 2025 Lucas Byrd stood supreme after outpacing Iowa’s National Title-favorite Draka Ayala in the championship match. Stealing the show in the biggest night of the year, he had placed a target on his back in what would become the most impressive division in recent memory.
Ayala, Dillon Campbell, Jacob Van Dee, Braxton Brown and many more were taken out by Byrd en route to his All-American finish. Every night out the target stayed squarely on his chest and every night out he took it on with a smile and more often than not, a hand raise.
It would take quite the career for an opponent to match what Byrd was up against in his final season at Illinois but Byrd’s RAF08 opponent may have exactly that.
Lehigh’s Darian Cruz suited up for his junior season with a “National Title or bust” mentality. While every college wrestler heads into practice with that mindset, Cruz truly lived, breathed and ate that mentality and the results spoke for themselves.
Names like Nick Piccininni, Thomas Gilman, Joey Dance, Ethan Lizak and more stood in the way of his dreams and while he may not have to lock horns with every title-threat in the loaded division, every match would be with a title-threat and serious contender.
Cruz would conquer almost everyone in his way, going 31-2 in his championship season showing composure in overtime against Gilman before taking out Lizak and proving beyond a shadow of a doubt he was the king of the hill.
The two share a unique bond that few wrestlers can relate to but are not slotted to face off at RAF08 and decide who the ultimate “deep division wrestler" is.
Byrd carries into the match a discipline that few have cracked the code on. His refusal to chase shots that aren't available takes away the offense of any scramble-heavy wrestlers. He doesn’t need four or five looks to create a scoring opportunity because he doesn’t linger in positions that result in scrambles and “broken plays.”
If he comes equipped with this discipline and his heavy hips, he can stifle, frustrate and defeat Cruz.
For Cruz, the playbook is what has made him successful for over a decade now. Force a wrestler who leans on traditional offense and defense into the unorthodox. For Curz, it isn’t about matching Byrd in clean, controlled wrestling, it’s about forcing him into a match he doesn’t want to have and keeping him there.
Byrd’s structure is his strength but Cruz have faced opponents like this before and can test the limitations. Faking and re-attacking can draw reactions and create tells for an wrestler who thrives in fundamentals and consistency.
If Cruz can crack the code on Byrd early and be ready to score in transition, he can secure yet an RAF victory and attach his name to the top of the heap yet again.
It may not be pretty for either man but that’s the kind of atmosphere both men have found the most success in before. It’s going to be a fun night out for both competitors and the fans glued to the match.
