Zahid Valencia vs Khidir Saipudinov - NCAA National Championship Pedigree Meets Dagestani Grit

It’s another international test for Zahid Valencia as he prepares to take on Khidir Saipudinov at RAF Abu Dhabi. Valencia comes into the matchup with a World Title, three Pan Ams, two NCAA National Championships and an established RAF résumé while Saipudinov looks to turn his international success into a statement win on wrestling’s biggest stage.

One has youth and grit, one has hardware and David Taylor in his corner. Valencia vs Saipudinov is a matchup that the world was bound to see somewhere, the beginning of a potential rivalry begins at RAF Abu Dhabi.

Valencia spent years proving he belongs among the best wrestlers in the world and eventually became just that. A two-time NCAA champion at Arizona State, Valencia carried that success into freestyle and became a World Champion in 2025 and swept through many international tournaments every time he has competed in them.

He’s quietly one of the most accomplished wrestlers to step onto the RAF mat and has continued to show that his international pedigree translates to freestyle success.

His RAF run has featured wins over Nate Jackson, Mahmoud Sebie and Aeoden Sinclair, along with a victory over Kyle Dake at Final X earlier in the year. Valencia has already shown that he can win in different ways, whether he’s shutting down an opponent’s offense or creating the kind of scoring opportunities that make a match get out of hand quickly.

This matchup, however, presents a different kind of challenge for the decorated American. Saipudinov is young and may not have the same name recognition in US wrestling circles but he is far from an untested prospect. The Dagestani-Native has already established himself on the international circuit and is looking to prove that his success overseas can carry over to the RAF stage.

Even with no title on the line, this is simply the biggest opportunity of his budding career.

Saipudinov earned a bronze medal at the 2025 Worlds and followed that performance with standout showings at other international events. He’s turning the right heads and has earned his shot at a proven superstar.

He’s a wrestler who has had to fight through deep international brackets against some of the best competition in the world. He has proven to be wise beyond his years on the mat which is very important when facing somebody like Valencia, who knows exactly what it takes to compete …and win at the highest level.

For Valencia, the keys to victory will be his offensive versatility. He has the credentials to wrestle a conservative match, but his ability to create scoring opportunities and turn a small opening into a commanding lead is what makes him so dangerous. If he can establish his attacks, force Saipudinov to defend and then capitalize, he will have full control of the match.

He will also need to weaponize misdirection against the 23-year-old. Valencia added misdirection to his arsenal later in his career. It’s one of his strongest weapons with less understanding and footage to break down. Jumping on the opportunity early to pile on the points before Saipudinov’s corner has a chance to make adjustments could be huge later in the match.

For Saipudinov, he knows he will need to make Valencia wrestle defensively. Even with how skilled Valencia is, he can’t win the match if he’s reacting the entire time. Look for Saipudinov to open with attacks of his own to eliminate the ability to dictate where scrambles can turn into big numbers on the scoreboard.

He also needs to turn Valencia’s counter wrestling against him. Valencia has an ability to create offense out of opponents’ reactions. Saipudinov can use feints of his own to avoid or mask predictability. Disguising his entries could be the difference in the biggest opportunity of his career.

One man is looking to continue his run as one of RAF’s most accomplished competitors. The other is looking to introduce himself to the world. It all comes to a head at RAF Abu Dhabi.
